Officer Timothy Loehmann Fired Two Years After Tamir Rice Shooting
Two years, six months and eight days after Tamir Rice’s murder, the Cleveland police officer who fatally shot him has been fired.
According to The New York Times, Officer Timothy Loehmann was terminated and his partner Frank Garmback, the officer who was driving the patrol car, would be suspended for 10 days beginning Wednesday.
The decision came after what Cleveland’s Mayor Frank Jackson called an “exhaustive process” of an investigation.
Cleveland’s chief of police, Calvin Williams, spoke at a news conference and confirmed that Loehmann’s firing was effective immediately.
“This has been tough on our entire community, and definitely on the Rice family,” said Williams. “When this happened in 2014, I made the comment that this is of course a tragedy, but it’s even more tragic that it happened at the hands of a Cleveland police officer.”
“After over two years of investigation by our agency, the county prosecutor’s office (and) the sheriff’s department, I think we’ve come to what we consider a fair conclusion to this process,” Williams said.
Before you get too excited however it’s important to note that Loehmann wasn’t fired for shooting Rice, it was because he falsified information on his police application’s personal history statement.
REALLY?
In 2015 a grand jury declined to bring charges against any of the officers involved in the 12-year-old’s shooting and last year the city of Cleveland settled a wrongful death lawsuit with Tamir’s family for $6 million.
Does this feel like justice to you for Tamir Rice???
