Out Of Pocket: Texas Teachers Name Student “Most Likely To Become A Terrorist”
A couple of Texas teachers thought it would be funny to hold a mock awards ceremony for students at the end of a long school year, but one mother isn’t laughing. Ena Hernandez, the mother of an advanced program 7th grader at Anthony Aguirre Junior High, says the teachers need to be fired over their tasteless “terrorist” joke.
KHOU.com reports that a hand full of teachers at a middle school thought awarding Lizeth Villanueva a certificate that said “most likely to become a terrorist” was simply funny. “They just found it as a joke,” said 7th grader Lizeth Villanueva. She says they handed it out to her and similar awards to other kids and laughed.
The school district refused to disclosed the names or amount of teachers involved, starting it’s a ‘personal matter’. Here is the statement Channel View released about the incident:
“The Channelview ISD Administration would like to apologize for the insensitive and offensive fake mock awards that were given to students in a classroom. Channelview ISD would like to assure all students, parents and community members that these award statements and ideals are not representative of the district’s vision, mission and educational goals for our students.
“The teachers involved in this matter have been disciplined according to district policy and the incident is still under investigation.”
